Are you wondering what is the difference between a wasp and a hornet? This question will often raise confusion and uncertainty among even seasoned pest control professionals. We use the term “hornet” when describing yellow jackets and wasps in many cases. The only “real” hornet found in Texas is the bald-faced hornet; however, experts classify this species as a type of yellowjacket.

There are more than 15,000 various species of wasps that exist today, which includes types of hornets. The three most prevalent types of hornets in North America include the European (giant) hornet, the bald-faced hornet, and the cicada killer, or the sand hornet.

Hornets usually are larger than wasps and typically appear in duller colors. For example, the European hornet typically measures about one inch in length, which is nearly two times larger than a yellow jacket wasp.

Are Hornet Stings Dangerous?

Are wasps dangerous? The majority of wasps and hornets will attempt to repel anyone that approaches the nest. The bald-faced hornet has a stinger that allows for repeatedly stinging—often in groups, which can result in someone having exposure to a substantial amount of venom.

Six Steps To Deter Hornets In McAllen

Some of the recommended tips and best practices that property owners should consider when trying to limit the presence of wasps include:

  1. Fill or repair any damaged areas that have created voids or cavities, such as within siding, eaves, or near gutter systems.
  2. Install screens or durable mesh-like material over vents and chimney openings.
  3. Remove fallen trees, firewood piles, and other accumulations of debris from the yard area.
  4. Consider planting alternatives instead of flowers.
  5. Limit water accumulation and excessive moisture by clearing gutter systems, avoiding over-watering plants, and repairing any leaky spigots or hoses.
  6. Keep trash bags placed outside containing food scraps in garbage receptacles with functional lids to limit access.

Property owners are encouraged to regularly inspect their exterior areas for any signs of nest-building activity. Always approach any suspected nests cautiously and avoid provoking these pests.
