Fleas
What are fleas?
Fleas are insects that are regularly linked with pet owners because these blood-feeding pests prefer dogs and cats as their hosts. However, it is not just pet owners that need to guard their properties against biting fleas; fleas can become a problem on any property, whether pets are present or not.
Fleas are so tiny they are often mistaken for a speck of dirt, that is until they use their powerful back legs to jump out of your way. Fleas are frustrating pests to deal with because they are prolific breeders and quickly develop large populations. In McAllen, Texas, our warm, humid weather allows these pests to remain active throughout the entire year.

Where will I find fleas?
Fleas have a short life cycle of only about two to three months, and for the majority of their short life, they spend it on the back of an animal host, moving wherever they take them.
Wherever animals hang out, there may be large populations of fleas. Fleas that have not found their way to a host yet will hang out in shaded areas of our yards. Tall grass, leaf piles, mulch, woodpiles, and spaces under decks are all places in our yards that small animals and fleas call home.
Unfortunately, fleas don’t just live outdoors; they also live successfully inside our homes. Common places to discover these pests include bedding, upholstered furniture, under rugs, on your pets, and behind baseboards and wood trim.

Why do I have a flea & tick problem?
The reason fleas are active and such a problem in our area throughout the year is that their primary hosts, rodents, and other wild animals are active in our region year-round.
Fleas are primarily introduced into our yards by wild animals. Then when we or our pets spend time in our yards, we regularly come into contact with biting fleas and have a good chance of bringing them inside our homes.
Rodents also regularly transport fleas into our homes. When rodents move inside, foraging for food or safe shelter, they bring themselves and the fleas living in their fur. As they move around your home, flea eggs will drop to the ground and start an infestation.
It is not just living things that cause a flea infestation. Secondhand items like rugs and upholstered furniture can house hitchhiking fleas and lead to an infestation in any of our homes.

Are fleas dangerous?
Unlike ticks and other blood-feeding pests, fleas living in the United States aren’t significant in spreading diseases. The bigger concern when it comes to fleas is the relentless bites they deliver. Though people aren’t their preferred hosts, they won’t hesitate to bite us and feed on our blood when living in our homes or yards.
Most people and animals are allergic to flea saliva and develop red itchy rashes around the bite sites. Flea bite dermatitis is a serious concern, and itching at their bites can lead to secondary infections, scabbing, and scarring. In our pets, a heavy flea infestation can result in the loss of fur and the development of anemia.
Fleas are also responsible for spreading parasitic tapeworms to both people and animals.
