Ants

What are ants?

Ants

Many insects live throughout Texas, and some of the most common insects to find their way into our yards and homes are ants. Ants are very social, excellent communicators, and work together to take advantage of any space that provides their basic needs. Unfortunately, because of our area's warm weather, ants remain active throughout the entire year and constantly threaten our properties.

Various species of ants thrive in the Rio Grande Valley, and the most common to find their way into our homes and businesses include:

  • Black ants
  • Carpenter ants
  • Crazy ants
  • Fire ants
  • Ghost ants
  • Harvester ants
  • Leaf cutter ants
  • Sugar ants
  • How can I prevent ants in the future?

In addition to implementing professional pest control services, the following five tips will help make your property less attractive to the ants that live throughout Texas.

    1. Limit an ant colony's access to food in your home by keeping lids on trash cans, keeping outdoor eating areas clear of food debris, maintaining gardens, and picking up uneaten pet food.
    2. Limit an ant colony's access to food inside your home by maintaining a clean kitchen, washing dishes daily, regularly vacuuming, and storing food out of their reach.
    3. Maintain the structure of your home to keep ants out by sealing any spaces in exterior walls, repairing damage to the foundation, and closing up spaces around utilities entering your home.
    4. Maintain your lawn by mowing the grass regularly and cutting back shrubbery and other landscaping from your home's exterior walls.
    5. Get rid of excess moisture by fixing leaky pipes, repairing dripping fixtures, and using dehumidifiers to rid your home of excess moisture.

  • Where will I find ants?

Instead of asking where you find ants, it would probably be easier to ask where you won't find ants. Ants live worldwide in various habitats, including wooded areas, jungles, deserts, coastal areas, and dense urban areas.

When ants build their nests in our yards, they usually place them in the ground. Some species, like fire ants, build their nests in sunny open areas, while others place their nests in cool shaded areas like under fallen trees, mulch, foundations, and woodpiles.

If ants decide to move into your Texas home and build a satellite nest, they are most likely to place their nests behind walls, baseboards, or molding. They also like to build nests under counters and floors.

  • Why do I have an ant problem?

Ants are nesting in our McAllen, TX yards because they can't resist the reliable food and water sources they offer them.

Once ants are nesting comfortably in your yard, they will eventually find a way into your home.

Ants move into our homes when they are attracted to food odors or moisture or because our structures provide an escape from harsh weather conditions or predators.

  • Are ants dangerous?

Most ants are not harmful to people or property, but as with everything, there are exceptions. Some species of ants living in Texas are considered dangerous either to people or our property.

    • Carpenter ants create tunnels and nesting galleries inside wood. When they move into our homes to nest, over time, they will cause structural damage.
    • Fire ants are aggressive and will swarm, bite, and sting any person or animal they view as a threat. Their venom is powerful enough to trigger allergic reactions in many people.
    • Crazy ants live together in large numbers and quickly take over outdoor spaces where they can become problematic by damaging livestock, agricultural plants, and poultry.
    • Harvester ants are another species that can deliver painful bites and stings to people and animals.
